To showcase Kassel’s cultural landscape during the documenta exhibitions, the City of Kassel has been creating temporary platforms every five years since 2002—each designed and implemented by Machbar. Following documenta fifteen in 2022, this initiative has now been established on a permanent basis.

Every five years, the international art and culture scene turns its attention to Kassel, when documenta attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and shapes the global discourse on contemporary art.
Culture in Kassel—during documenta, this also includes hundreds of concerts, performances, readings, and exhibitions, some of which were developed specifically for the supporting program. These were promoted under the “KasselKultur” label—initially as a book, and later exclusively in digital form.

The modular visual identity of Kassel-Kultur2022 provides a flexible framework for a wide variety of events, genres, and formats. And following the 2022 documenta year, it has been transformed into an umbrella brand without a restrictive year designation.

Kassel Kultur has established itself as the central digital communications platform for the cultural scene. A comprehensively maintained database of event organizers and dates, along with accompanying social media posts, ensures that even lesser-known events receive the attention they deserve.
The transition to a permanent brand is also visually anchored: While logo shapes were used as motif masks for Kassel-Kultur2022, they now serve as eye-catching elements or structural components. By retaining the display font, the typographic look remains consistent.
